Against the #3 State ranked Crusaders, the Hurricanes had an inspired first half and trailed 1-0 at the break.  In the second half, MVC battled throughout but gave up three goals as they completed their third match in less than three full days.  The ‘Canes may have played their best match of the young season and demonstrated grit and showed growth against NWC.
September 24 at Mount Vernon Christian
Orcas Island 2, MVC 0
The Hurricanes opened the league portion of their schedule at home and battled Orcas to a scoreless first half.  Two unfortunate lapses midway through the second period cost the ‘Canes.  An own goal resulted from a failed clear following a scramble in front of the net in the 58th minute.  Six minutes later, Chase Drake got clearly behind the MVC defenders and netted the Vikings second goal.  MVC was unable get a goal on the afternoon despite several great looks late and dropped the league opener.

Shoreline Christian 1, MVC 0 in a Shootout
MVC played an outstanding match against the league-leading and 8th-ranked Crusaders.  The ‘Canes controlled much of the offensive action and covered well on defense.  Despite outshooting their opponents, the match ended 0-0 at regulation and following two, five minute overtimes.  In the shootout, Shoreline Christian connected on their first PK, which was good enough to win the shootout 1-0, as all five Hurricane shooters were stopped.
September 30 at Evergreen Field, Mountlake Terrace
MVC 4, Cedar Park Christian 3 Shootout
The Lions jumped to a 2-0 lead, before Kevin Anderson took a Caleb Riley cross and buried in the MVC goal in the 31st minute.  Twenty minutes into the second half, Riley worked himself around two defenders and from a side angle, scored upper far post to even the match.  The ‘Canes took the lead in the 69th minute from a set piece when Riley sent a ball to the feet of Daniel Houtsma who sent his hot past the Lion keeper.  A defensive lapse the final three minutes allowed Cedar Park to even the match and force overtime.  No one scored in overtime.  The Hurricanes earned their first league win of the season when they converted all five PK’s, while the Lions netted three of four.

The Hurricanes’ trip south for the non-league match was successful as MVC’s defensive was relentless and turned the ball back to the offense for quick counterattacks much of the afternoon.  Seth Parman, Michael deHaan and Daniel Houtsma did the majority of the defensive work in front of keeper Jesse Ketcham.  The ‘Canes netted their first goal of the afternoon in the 17th minute when James Hurd followed up on an opportunity from Tyler Houtsma.  The score was 1-0 at half.  Tyler Houtsma scored in the 66th minute from a Wayne Hancock pass and he netted his second goal of the match a minute later following a pass from Caleb Riley (looked like an own goal, but was at the line).  October 10 at Mount Vernon Christian
Match with Evergreen Lutheran cancelled.
The Hurricanes’ rescheduled match with the Eagles was cancelled when Evergreen Lutheran called Monday to say that they had injured players and some that did not come to school due to illness so would not be traveling to compete in the non-league match.   Because of the lateness in the season, the match will not be rescheduled.
Tuesday, October 11 at Eastsound (Orcas Island)
MVC 7, Orcas Island 2
MVC used a high pressure and purposeful offense, along with a solid, covering defense to pick up the important league win.  Tyler Houtsma was responsible for netting three goals for the ‘Canes, who jumped to a 4-1 lead at halftime.  Caleb Riley contributions to the victory were huge~scoring two goals and dishing out four assists on the afternoon.  James Hurd and Michael deHaan each had a goal for MVC as the team won for the fourth time in five matches.  Two of the Hurricane goals came on perfectly executed set pieces off of corner kicks.  Early in the match, Jesse Ketcham stopped two point blank shots and he also came up big in the second half with back-to-back stops.
Friday, October 14 at Shoreline Center (not Twin Ponds)
Shoreline Christian 4, MVC 0
After conceding a goal in the first thirty seconds of the match that set the tone for the remainder, the Hurricanes did not respond with one of their best efforts of the season.  Shoreline Christian was able to pass the ball well on the familiar home turf and had a variety of offensive chances.  MVC had a few good opportunities and shots on goal, but only a couple would result in solid saves needing to be made. The halftime score was 3-0 and the lone goal of the second half came early as the ‘Canes moved several defenders into the midfield and forward hoping to score and cut into the Crusaders lead.  MVC will play Tuesday against Cedar Park Christian at home (4PM) as the seniors are recognized.
October 18 at Mount Vernon Christian
MVC 1, Cedar Park Christian 0
The Hurricanes battled defensively throughout the match and kept the Lions’ shots out of the net.  Jesse Ketcham was in goal for the ‘Canes.  MVC found a way to win in the 80th minute on a pure hustle play.  Following a defensive clear, the ‘Canes counterattacked and Tyler Houtsma got to a ball and was fouled 30 yards out.  Caleb Riley sent in a perfect ball on a free kick and the home side executed a beautiful set piece that left James Hurd in a position to head home the winner past the Cedar Park Christian goalie.  The Senior and Parent Recognition Night win kept the ‘Canes tied for the third and final league playoff spot with Orcas Island.
 October 20 at La Conner
La Conner 3, MVC 2
The Hurricanes battled the league champion Braves throughout the match before falling and leaving themselves in a third place tie.  La Conner scored in the eighth minute, but the ‘Canes responded when Tyler Houtsma shot a ground cross that Caleb Riley slid onto to net the equalizer.  The match stood 1-1 at halftime.  MVC took the lead in the 48th minute when Caleb Riley turned and scored an amazing goal after a James Hurd got the ball to Tyler Houtsma, who found Riley.  La Conner tied the match in the 61st minute on a deflected ball following a long Brave throw-in. La Conner’s game winner came in the 69th minute when the Hurricanes could not clear a corner kick from in front of their net and headed in an own goal.  MVC had a handful of great opportunities late but could not even the match before it ended.
 October 22 at La Conner
Northwest League Play-Off Match
MVC 1, Orcas Island 0
On a sloppy, rain-soaked field, the Hurricanes came up with a swarming defense after getting a goal midway through the first half, to advance into the District One Tournament with the postseason win.  Michael Hancock took a nicely squared ball from Caleb Riley and got it high enough to deflect off the Orcas keeper’s hands into the net in the 20th minute. The match’s only goal would stand up.  MVC’s defense scrambled around but held their shape as they cleared balls away to the midfielders and forwards throughout the second half.  Goalkeeper Jesse Ketcham stopped a handful of good Viking opportunities and the Orcas keeper on the other end was tested as well, especially in the first half.
October 25 at Mount Vernon Bulldogs Stadium
Northwest District One Round One
Grace Academy 2, MVC 0
The Hurricanes saw their post-season ended on the artificial turf of Bulldog Stadium in the afternoon match.  MVC did not score on four first half corners and two great shot opportunities.  The Eagles were around the frame a lot in the first half, but netted the match’s lone goal in the first half on a header off a restart free kick in the 39th minute.  MVC appeared to have equaled the match early in the second half when they netted a lofted shot from 30-yards out on a signaled play-on advantage by the center referee.  However he called a foul on the second hard challenge while the ‘Canes still had the advantage that negated the shot and the ‘Canes  subsequent free kick was turned away by the Grace defense.  Still down 1-0, MVC switched up their defense to try to get more offensive pressure, but Grace Academy did a great job countering and were able to find room and accentuate the Hurricanes’ space and put away an easy tally in front of the net.  A strength all season, the ‘Canes failed to capitalize on a handful of corners and set pieces in the second half as well.

Daniel Houtsma and Wayne Hancock concluded a four-year stint with the Hurricanes, while Michael deHaan finished up a solid two year career.  Together, the three competed in 196 matches for MVC.  All three served as team captains this season for the Hurricanes, who were just 1-6 to begin the season and battled back to finish with an 8-10 record.  The ‘Canes essentially battled through three must win matches to continue their season into the post-season before coming up short against the Eagles.
